Thanks everyone for your replies. I went back in with fileman and tried to edit the file that way, and got the same "can't edit" error when trying to change .01 field in file 8989.3 I wonder why they set it up that way. In Nancy's install script, she directs one to do the sort of direct setting

File 8989.3, field .01 is a DINUM'ed field (the input transform is in fact S DINUM=1). DINUM'ed fields may not be edited. The reason for this is that most DINUM'ed fields are of the form S DINUM=X, and since X is the value in the .01 field, any change in X would change the subscript ... and it's
