I use a cheap router and uplink that to a cheap hub...
(You only need the router to start small...)
That gives me spots for six computers.
I don't bother to network them in the traditional sense.
Mine do NOT need to talk to each other. Only to get
the Internet access...
Can two separate computers in two different rooms at my house plug into a
phone jack and share one DSL/phone line? Or do they have to be networked?

Yes, network the computers. If the DSL modem doesn't have a built-in
router, you will have to get a separate router.
