I have estata cables on my tivo extender that have been working fine for
years. I have estate cables on one of my PCs that hold extra drives,
like some 8 extra drives. They seem to be working fine too.

I have recently seen failures on SATA cables myself. I have been writing
it off as being cables of an unknown age. Interesting that others have
seen it, but I believe it is likely coincidence.

I have one ESATA device. It is a 2TB Fantom external hard drive that
supports both USB2, and ESATA. It has an Hitachi drive in an
aluminium enclosure that vents at both ends. I put a case fan in
front of it that blows air through it, and in the three years I have
run it 24/7 it has never given

Is native External SATA port on the motherboard something that can be
treated like a USB port ... can you plug a ESATA drive in and out
while running? Or do you have to treat the drive the same way you
would an internal drive?

Depends on the chipset/mobo and how it is set up. Some allow the mobo SATA
ports to be "safely removed," others don't. For instance, I have an nVidia
based board that will even allow the system drives to be removed, although I
have never tried. Another board with an Intel ICH9R south bridge will no
I got a new case that has an eSATA connector on the front panel.
The mobo has a bunch of SATA ports on it. I'm only using two in my
default situation.
Can I connect the eSATA connector to one of these SATA ports on the
mobo? I'd be plugging in and unplugging from this port as one does with

Hey,
I need to get a longer (6') ESATA cable. Looking on Newegg, they range from
$5 to $30. Is there that much difference in the cables?

Anyone running one of these? If so, which?
I read in MaxPC that an eSATA HD is faster than firewire 800 and much
faster than USB 2.

Also, I've read that on a lot of mobos the eSATA port cannot be made to
work correctly. Anyone have any comment on that?
Thanks.
