Currently running an Areca 1210 8x PCI-E RAID contoller on an Ati RD580
board (and previously in an NForce4 SLI board)works a charm in the 16x
slot (don't think it will fit in the 4x slots either).
Blistering performance as well :)

Yup. PCI-E 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x and 16x cards will work in the 16x PCI-E slots.
Apparently the larger slots are supposed to be backwards compatible with the
smaller PCI-E cards. i.e. 8x will support 1x, 2x and 4x cards, but not 16x
cards and so on.
