Dear AJL:

It was suggested to me that I contact you regarding a researcher's
request regarding the above subject. I let her know that Sophie
Tucker's papers are at the American Jewish Archives, but any additional
information would be helpful.

Below is her request:

I am putting together a grant proposal, and I am writing to see if you
could kindly help me locate information (broadcast, archival,
periodicals)
on the following Jewish women comediennes: Belle Barth, Pearl
Williams,
Patsy Abbott, Totie Fields and (maybe Sophie Tucker--she is better
documented than the other women I'm working on). I have located
recordings
and a few books with references to some of these comics--Nachman,
Segarve
and others, but I'm wondering if perhaps there are special collections
that
I can mine for more information.

I'm afraid I haven't had much luck locating databases or archival
sources. I just called the Museum of Television and Broadcasting in
NY
today, so we'll see what happens with that. Bowling Green State
University
has some of the old recordings of Belle Barth and Pearl Williams. As
for
Abbott, I have come across some material which is in
Philadelphia--Freedman's collection (I would have to check on that)
which
has some of her doing her material in Yiddish.

Thank you

Rebecca
