The complexity of women's lives

as seen in four extraordinary

documentary films

Dear Librarian,

Four poignant documentaries from Ruth Diskin Films challenge viewers
to reflect upon the current state of universal basic human rights for
women in Israel as well as worldwide. They provide intimate insights
into the daily context of the political and religious realities in
contemporary Israel from a variety of women's perspectives. Their
stories cover unique, yet global struggles with age-old inhumane
persistent social problems surrounding widespread issues such as:
women's rights in divorce, domestic violence, sexual abuse, slavery
and the rights of mothers.

Each film, in its own unique way, allows insight into the challenges
that women face on a daily basis. LADY KUL EL ARAB tells the
heart-wrenching story of a young Druze woman whose only desire is to
participate in a beauty pageant.CROSSING BORDERS allows a peek at two
Muslim women who are trying to achieve equality against the men in
their lives. THREE TIMES DIVORCED is the tortured story of a woman
who is forced to first marry, and then divorce completely against her
will. And finally the film the newly released film by BBC
correspondent Lipika Pelham, DEADLY HONOUR, which is narrated by 15
year old Salma who is a survivor of an honor killing.

These films have already been seen by a wide variety of audiences at
international film festivals as well as part of television
broadcasts. Each film individually – and all four together will
greatly enhance your library collection. The subject of women's lives
has never been more compelling and your audiences will certainly
benefit from the unique and important perspectives these films convey.

We are proud to offer each film at the price of $300 with a 15%
discount on the purchase of all four. For Public Libraries the price
is $115 per title with a 10% discount on the purchase of the four
films. Prices do not include shipping and handling.

LADY KUL EL ARAB

A young girl and her dreams are painfully presented in this eloquent
documentary. This is the story of a young Druze woman who is caught
in the complexities of her own society's values and the realities of
modern Israel. Her desire to fulfill the fairy-tale of participating
in a beauty pageant became an intriguing story that gripped an entire
country. (56 min. Written and directed by Ibtisam Mara'ana)

CROSSING BORDERS

The story of the political awakening of two Palestinian women. They
struggle to achieve equality in a male dominated society as they
cross both political and personal boundaries. (53 min. Written and
directed by Bilal Yousef)

THREE TIMES DIVORCED

A powerful film which explores the boundaries and the way out of them
as a Muslim woman struggles against the norms of a society determined
to constrain her. Khitam, a Gaza Band born Palestinian woman, was
married off in an arranged match to an Israeli Arab, followed him to
Israel and bore him six children. When he divorces her. - in
absentia – in the Sharia (Muslim) court, he gained custody of the
children and Khitam was left with nothing. (75 min. Written and
directed by Ibtisam Mara'ana)

DEADLY HONOUR

Forcefully documents multiple murders and attempted murders of young
women in the Israeli city of Ramle. Young girls grow up in fear which
is sealed with a code of silence – no one talks about the murders, no
one goes to court. But the status quo changed one day when the body
of a murdered woman is found in a nearby forest.
