Shalom,
From past mail on HaSafran we were under the impression that there
is a new updated CD of Encyclopedia Judaica.
We ordered form Amazon and received the same old version 1.0 with an
open box and no literature.
My bookkeeper sent it back and got an invoice of $268 restocking.

I fully agree with Linda. This is unfortunately only one of several (if not
many) articles that are not fully updated. This is to say nothing of the
lack of visuals in the new edition. It is clearly not a tribute either to
Thomson Gale nor the editors. Marion

Hi, Folks.
The Sydney Taylor Book awards are mentioned in the entry on Sydney
Taylor, which I wrote. The Sydney Taylor entry is new. I agree that
it would have been nice for the AJL and the awards to have their own
entries, but at least the awards are mentioned. The sentence in the

I compared the 1972 article on children's literature with the one in the new

means that most, if not all, of the article is out-of-date and incomplete.
There is, for example, no mention of the Sydney Taylor Book Award or any
The feedback that I am hearing from people is that of much disappointment in
the new EJ. It seems in their rush to get it out by deadline that many
omissions were made. I am disappointed in the cutting out of so many of the
illustrations, for example. Linda's example is just one of, I am sure,
Janice's ideas are sound, and I hope we can all get on the bandwagon
and prevail upon Gale.

We just received the new edition of EJ and I noticed that there is no

there are online sites with this information, but it was important to

We ran into this as well; this issue is that the old EJ can't run on
computers that have TOO MUCH (!) memory. We came up with this
(somewhat complicated) fix:
1. go to RUN on the start menu.
2. type in (in capital letters): MSCONFIG
3. click OK.
4. click on the tab BOOT.INI
5.
Thanks Dan. I had seen this fix online. Unfortunately, we provide EJ for
our students here and are not able to run this set of commands every time a
student wants access to EJ. Changing the memory allocation affects too many
of our other databases. If any one knows of another work around, I'd
the runtime error. I am not yet subscribed to this
listserv, but can be contacted off list.
Thank you so much!
