Reading the recent exchange about the "underground' Haredi book publishing in Israel and abroad, I can't help wondering what has happened to a certain segment of Am ha-Sefer.
In previous generations it has been such an honor to publish a book, so much so, that great Rabbis were known by the title of their major opus. >From what Aaron and Yaakov write, it appears that some of today's haredi writers have no sense of posterity. If their books are not placed in libraries, nobody beyond their immediate family will ever know about them, and no historical research would be possible in future generations. Is this really a disregard for posterity, or fear of the Israeli (and any other) government, or just plain isolationism -- this is a topic for sociological research.
