It might just be me, but it seems that the Encyclopaedia Judaica

Hi Andrea,
You're absolutely right about schools not having quizzes. Before I
embarked on this, I checked with the librarian at my local
elementary school, who
checked with the other librarians in the school district. Apparently most
schools no longer purchase individual quizzes, but pay a f
Re Accelerated Reading books, last year I was going to do that --
mark our books with the AR reading level. The problem is that kids
involved in AR in their public schools take the AR quizzes to earn
the points -- there's a test (on computer) they take and must achieve
a certain score in order
Hi,
I work at a small synagogue (about 125 member families) and our
weekly Religious School averages 7-10 students per class (K-7). I
appreciate the discussion of reading programs as it's given me some
good ideas (I especially like the one of reading to raise money for
tzedakah projects)

gets hard starting in 4th grade--and by 6th grade it's a real challenge.
I found that some 6th graders were often not actually reading the
books, but simply copied a sentence from the blurb or in other ways

Rachel,
Good luck with trying to engage middle school students.
I, too, find it a challenge enticing those students past the Hey
class to borrow and read our Jewish library books. Unfortunately, I
have too small a budget to offer prizes for reading. This type of

Dear Hasafranim,
Getting students, esp. jaded middle schoolers, to utilize our library
has been like pulling teeth. (Ours is a 3 day/week religious school

grades. We have a very small school.)

Andrea,
You are a mind reader... Sorry I haven't gotten the announcement out to all...
Reading lists were posted to the AJL site this week.
Please check Book Club Reading Lists ... 2007-08 under "Resources" on
the AJL website for reading selections from book clubs that submitted lists.

Will there be a posting on the AJL website of the books various

This year, I've begun 3 new reading programs at our religious school,
for grades 4,5, and 6. I've borrowed or adapted programs from my AJL
colleagues, so I'd like to credit you.
Our 4th graders study Israel, so I adapted a program of Jeannette
Radom which she called Books, Trees, and Leaves.
Does anybody know how to read an Israeli legal citation?
We were wondering if from this citation we could find out when the
judgement was rendered.
It is as follows:

Hi, all.
I got loads of responses in my mailbox to my query
about Reading Incentive programs. Nearly all of them
were like this: "Please pass your responses on to me."
So here they are: there were three ideas. The BINGO
card is most popular; you distribute a BINGO card and

I, too, think my message to ha-safran got lost.
I am interested in learning about reading incentive

Welcome to the Family is a wonderful book. It was written by a woman
who taught basic Judaism classes for years in Portland, Oregon. It is

Can you recommend a simple, short reading for a non-Jewish friend who wants
to learn about Judaism? Something that might brief on holidays and
tradition? Maybe a pamphlet or a reader for teenagers. She is a adult but I
want something easy.Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'll also be starting a reading program at a synagogue where I teach next

We'd like to start a reading incentive program for the
religious school at our synagogue in the fall. If
anyone has any programs that they've used
successfully, we'd appreciate hearing about them.
