Hebraic Section of the African & Middle Eastern Division & the Hebrew Language Table in cooperation with the Embassy of Israel present: THE CHOSEN: The History of an Idea & the Anatomy of an Obsession-Lecture by the book's author-AVI BEKER Tuesday, May 20, 2008 1:00 PM Pickford Theatre Madison Building, Library of Congress, Washington, DC What does it mean for Jews to be the *Chosen People*? How is Jewish chosenness perceived by non-Jews? Avi Beker examines the idea of *chosenness* from the Old and New Testaments and The Quran to the Arab-Israeli conflicts to popular culture references, and highlights what all of us can learn from this very complex and controversial label. Avi Beker is the visiting Goldman Professor in the Department of Government at Georgetown University and lectures on international diplomacy at Tel Aviv University in Israel where he is also head of the UN Project and the Jewish Policy Project. Avi Beker served as Secretary General of the World Jewish Congress (WJC) until 2003, and was a member of the Israeli mission to the United Nations. Beker's book 'The Chosen-The History of an Idea and The Anatomy of an Obsession' is being published on May 2008 by Palgrave-Macmillan.
