Accessioning and Cataloging Archivist

The Leo Baeck Institute New York (www.lbi.org) is a research,
exhibition, and lecture center whose library and archives offer the most
comprehensive documentation for the study of German Jewish history. The
LBI Archives is the outstanding documentation center of its kind.
Individuals, families, and organizations are depositing their documents
at the LBI. Family papers, community histories, and business and public
records date back centuries and touch upon virtually every phase of
German-Jewish life.

The Accessioning and Cataloging Archivist reports to the Chief Archivist
as part of a team of three full-time and three part-time archivists and
oversees the archives' accessioning and cataloging activities and
performs other duties relating to the processing of archival
collections:

*       Responsible for all accessions-related functions including
acknowledgement of new accessions and creation of online accession
records in the integrated collections management system (Ex Libris
ALEPH500).

*       Create preliminary catalog records for unprocessed collections
and catalog processed collections in MARC according to DACS using LC and
local subject headings.

*       Conduct reference services once a week at the reference desk of
our shared reading room with the partners of the Center for Jewish
History. Assist researchers with use of archival and library collections
and be responsible for managing remote reference queries, and respond to
research queries.

*       Supervise volunteers and interns.

Qualifications:

*       ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent degree
*       Familiarity with DACS, MARC, LCSH, and AACR2 cataloging
standards.
*       Familiarity with automated library information management
systems, such as Ex Libris ALEPH500.
*       Excellent reading knowledge of German.
*       Knowledge of German-Jewish history.
*       Familiarity with basic preservation and conservation standards
for archival and manuscript collections.
*       Excellent organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to
detail.
*       Supervise volunteers and interns
*       Ability to work independently and as part of a team
