Assuming you are cataloging electronically, into which utility are you 
"dumping" your records?  You will need to consult the manuals they have 
issued under "diacritical marks" to learn which keys produce the "alif" (= 
alef) and "ayn" (=ayin). I am familiar with OCLC, RLIN, and with VTLS.  We 
use VTLS for our local catalog, and "dump" our records into RLIN.  All 
three deal differently with diacritics.  Of course, if you are cataloging 
to cards, you are free to use whatever your local hardware and software or 
typewriter allow.
