Dear Hasafranim,
We all know the pain of being forced to weed our collections. I'm fast running
out of space in my adult fiction/literature sections. I've already done a ton
of weeding, but I wonder about what are considered classics -- Bernard Malamud,
Saul Bellow, Sholem Aleichem, Sholem Asch,
Hi Rachel,
I’ve been looking at creating a “classics” section in the Religious School
Parents’ Cafe with a check out clipboard, since they have empty shelves in

Rachel,
Do you have any circulation numbers - either from a library system or from
checkout cards? One way to weed is to see how many times a title has
circulated in the last 5 (or 10, or 15) years. Yes, Malamud wrote some books

worked until my recent retirement. I also was loathe to weed the the Sholom

When weeding in these sections these are my recommendations:
1) I would keep recent printings of books by these authors. Patrons are more
likely to select recent printings over older printings, particularly if there
are issues of condition.
2) If you are uncomfortable getting rid of a book,
We did a major weed last summer. One of my volunteers, a retired librarian,
has been going through the list of deaccessioned books, and linking them to
our on-line catalog from the Internet Archive.
I don't know if this is possible with Google's books, but it might be worth

I have used worldcat to see if other libraries nearby have them. If not, i
