Project Archivist



The Library of The Jewish Theological Seminary is seeking a full-time project 
archivist to process and create metadata for 1,750 digitized audio-visual 
recordings from its’ institutional archives pertaining to the American Jewish 
experience, 1941-1999. This is a one-year grant-funded project.



Description of the Position:

Upload digital files and create descriptive metadata for 1,750 digital 
recordings and films in mp4 and wav format utilizing the MODS metadata schema. 
Create EAD, DACS compliant finding aids to make the Library’s collection of 
audio and visual materials discoverable.





Duties/Responsibilities:

Responsible for creating descriptive metadata for each of the 1,750 recordings 
in mp4 or wav format and create an EAD, DACS compliant finding aids for two 
collections, with multiple series for one, larger collection.  Link the digital 
assets to finding aids. Meeting local and nation standards to ingest metadata 
in MODS format. Supplement the embedded technical and administrative metadata 
created by the digitization vendor and enter it into the Library’s DAMS 
(Islandora).  Troubleshooting and seeking solutions with bibliographic control, 
controlled vocabulary, and database issues. Create a finding aid in 
ArchivesSpace and bibliographic record in Alma. The Project Archivist serves as 
an integral part of the archival team as well as the digital library teams.

 



Minimum Requirements:

​​ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS degree with an archival certificate as well as 
proficiency in Jewish studies or equivalent desirable. Familiarity in current 
archival processing standards (EAD, DACS) and Library cataloging standards and 
practices (RDA, LCSH, MARC21, MODS). Demonstrated experience creating complex 
finding aids as well as original cataloging.  Ability to work creatively, and 
effectively in a team environment and independently. Excellent organizational 
and time-management skills; and ability to communicate orally and in writing. 
Flexible in performing different tasks and learning new library skills. Prefer 
one year experience with Alma, ArchivesSpace and Islandora and working with 
audio visual materials.  ​
