Just a note to point out the neither my own website www.hollanderbooks.com nor my person have any association with the above referenced institution and website. Additionally I would like to point out that I am neither deceased nor ex-communicated as far as I know despite some conflicting evidence.
All the best, Henry Hollander From: Jacqueline Benefraim Sent: Saturday, October 10, 2015 10:07 PM To: hasaf...@lists.acs.ohio-state.edu Subject: [ha-Safran] Is Marrano Offensive Shalom, When I saw this discussion hit HaSafran, I forwarded the discussion to my cousin, Andrew Gottlieb, Ph.D.,Curator, Hollander Collection www.hollanderjudaica.com Below is his response: "I believe that language should be used to communicate effectively, and I can tell you, at least anecdotally, that "Marrano" is understand immediately and used regularly among the Jews of South Florida and within Jewish communities of the Latin American countries where I have completed reasearch. "Crypto-Jew" is NOT the same as "Marrano" and I will sit shiva for any Jew who makes up a ridiculous term to replace it, such as "EID, Exiled Inquisition Jew." I know that the term means "pig," but "Yankee" was no moniker of which to be proud either, until the colonists embraced it. Meantime, my personal short answer to your question is that most Hispnic Jews remain unoffended; the term is immediately understood, and I don't believe that the term warrants a linguistic war, a la the "n" word." I hope this brings some clarification to this issue. Jackie -- Jackie Ben-Efraim "Although the books had changed, I the reader had not."
