I take this back: ghc accepts the syntax Mark gives without complaint -- either I wasn't as unmuddled as I'd thought, or I typoed more fluently than usually. I think I was also wrong about the ghc-docs -- checking the user-guide for ghc-4.045, it seems perfectly consistent -- heaven knows what version I was looking at/thinking of originally.
