lease schedule
to the release schedule of ghc, i.e. I can not upgrade the mtl offered
for ArchLinux separately from ghc (without considerable effort on my
part).

How tight is the tie between ghc and ghci, would it be possible to
separate ghci and ghc?

ve many LISP REPLs allow the user to configure limits on
printing of lists, especially to avoid printing circular lists.
Just having a (user controllable) limit in GHCi on the number of items
of a list that is printed might be enough.
