Should I add the task to the build file so that I can compile with
1.4?
1) It still doesn't compile with 1.4.
2) There are still unit test failures.
I'm committing my changes anyway, as they are isolated.

There is no Hibernate 2.2. anymore, we are on Hibernate3 HEAD branch.
