A Pakistani student was jailed for six years in Britain Thursday
after admitting to disseminating propaganda and scouting for British
Muslims to join a 'holy war' in Afghanistan.
Abdul Rahman is the first person in Britain to be convicted of a
charge of disseminating terrorist information. He is also the first
to be charged with helping another person to breach a control order
by paying the airfare for a man to flee to Pakistan.
When police raided Rahman's house in Manchester, north-west England,
they were reported to have found computer discs of speeches given to
crowds in Pakistan chanting "Allah is calling for Jihad".
The 23-year old was said to have come to the UK in September 2004 on
a student visa, but quit his course at the University of Dundee in
Scotland the day after enrolling and travelled to Manchester, where
he met up with other young Muslim men.
The prosecution accused him of being part of a radical cell who
believed in fighting a holy war in Afghanistan with their "Muslim brothers."
"In essence, they were a group, or cell, of young men all espousing
the radical jihad philosophy that states non-believers in Islam are
legitimate targets. In particular, the true followers in Afghanistan
are the Taliban," his trial in Manchester was told.
