When I was working in the lab, anyone that was pregnant was automatically
removed from changing the processor and other duties where exposure was
possible. The other techs had no problem with this as we didn’t have to file
slides and blocks for awhile. Don’t forget, HR is there for the

James,
I totally agree with your assessment of the Slidemate printers. Have not had
any experience with the newer model.
Applying slide labels shouldn’t be an issue when dealing with one block and
slide(s) at a time. Some of this could depend upon your software available to

I have a copy, 1st edition of A Manual for Histologic Technicians by Ann
Preece. On the inside cover it says Wyoming Valley Hospital Laboratory 1962. I
don’t recall how I got it, but I never worked for the facility. Great for a new
student or Histology program. I’ll pay shipping to whomever is
Pam,
Do you have any insight as to why the Modesto position has been vacant for so
long? I’m not coming out of retirement, but just curious if it is pay or
working conditions, etc? It isn’t only the supervisor slot, but there has been
a tech position open as well. My brother lives in Modesto.
Pam,
Nice article!!

Charles,
If you have your heart set on a slide printer, go with the Sakura one. A Zebra
printer with the right labels and ribbon is an excellent alternative. Cassette
printing General Data hands down the best.

Richard,
All internal docs get their reports via EPIC or ORCA unless they specify
otherwise. All external clients get a fax or print copy. We have not heard of
any problems where there is more than one internal provider not getting a
report.

Vicki,
My first question is what computer/LIS system are you using? Are you a private
lab or part of a hospital? We are in an academic medical center, have our own
Pathology coders, but all billing is done by the hospital. We generate the

Is anyone using Beaker and willing to share pros and cons as you see them? What
were you using before switching to Beaker? Did the switch resolve any prior
issues and were new issues created? Feel free to email directly unless there is
other interest from the group. We are reevaluating our LIS.
Steven,
Our database keeps track of every variation of the report, but the
EMR/clinician only sees the latest copy. We try to limit the use of amendments
to demographic changes, date of service, but there are circumstances where an
amendment is more appropriate than an addendum. Let me know if
