Good Morning, We are having a debate about what a Lab assistant can and can
not do in the State of Florida. So, those of you in Florida please weigh in.
Can they make alcohol dilutions and use those alcohols to:
1) Change an automatic stainer
2) Change the tissue processor
What
Our Anatomic Path lab assistants:
1) Accept cases from courier and accession them
2) Gross core biopsies (all our lab assistants have Bachelors Degrees and have
been trained)
3) Cytology Prep
4) File slides and blocks
5) Fill supply orders for our clinician offices
6) Prepare some QA statist
Does anyone know of a regulation (CLIA, CAP, JACHO) for a lab assistants / non
certified working in histology (embedding, cutting, staining,
coverslipping and changing solutions) ? I know many out there have strong
"opinions" about this subject but I am interested in the actual regulations. I

assistants qualify by meeting the guidelines in ANP11610.
