Yes, these used to be available from Newcomer supply, but I think they are now
de-funked. Try a google search perhaps?

Since you have older microtomes, I suggest using an alignment block at each
microtome instead of purchasing the alignment tools. The tools can be found on
the web ttp://www.grale.com.au/products/view/804 , but they can be expensive
(as much as $700.00 each). If you have more than one
I'm not sure where you live but we use a company called DOLBEY-JAMISON.
Phone number is 610-495-2010 or 1-800-220-3073. They operate out of
Pennsylvania. I have found them to be thorough and very good at their job.

Sharon,
There are little springs located behind the knife holder plate . If one of
these is lost then it can cause the twisting that you describe. This happened
to me years ago when stripping and cleaning one of our Leica 2035 microtome's.
Hope this helps.

Sharon:
I will let others with personal experience with your particular
microtomes offer advice on how to repair them but, first and foremost,
if these problems occurred as a direct result of the service call, I
would be in immediate contact with the company that provided the
service, complain to
Usually the service techs that come in will give a 30 day call-back period that
is included as part of the service call. I would have them come back until it
is working properly.

The microtome jumping forward sounds like something isn't locking correctly
anymore--either the knife stage or the section thickness dial.
When our microtomes do that, I just try jiggling every part separately to
make sure everything is locked.

Hi Ana,
First, I would remove the knife and the knife holder and clean everything from
even the smallest debris.
After it is all spotless, I would put it together, make sure all screws are
tight and try it again. More likely this will solve the problem.
Second - look carefully at the knife

Go to Ace Hardware and get each employee one of these. It will work just
as well and works on any microtome. Buy your staff lunch with what you save.

We are also a research lab and do both decal and non-decal bone from mouse to

motorized and we love them with tungsten carbide or disposable knives. We have
them for 3 and 4 years with never a problem.

I use my fingers too, so no help there.
But an automated microtome is great because it frees both hands to
handle a ribbon as it is coming off the blade. It is easy to get

Dear Dr. Girish,
I agree with rene, if the qualitiy of the cuts is fine it doesn't matter if they
are 1µm or 2.3µm thick.
But I'm highly interested in how your GLP auditors want to calibrate the
thickness of the section cuts. Are you supposed to measure the slides after
cutting?! Before or after
