ISNA Web Site Hacked

by Dina Rashed

WASHINGTON (IslamOnline) - The Internet site of the Islamic Society of
North
America (ISNA) came under attack by a Zionist hacker who posted the flag
of
Israel and wrote a hate message against “Muslim Extremists” on the home
page
on Tuesday.

The attack lasted only 15 minutes before an ISNA employee discovered it.
The
site was immediately restored through backup files, said Ashfaq Lodhi,
ISNA’
s Information Technology director, in an interview with IslamOnline.

“This is the first time that we experienced such an attack, and we are
currently working to add more defensive measures to our software to
prevent
future incidents,” added Lodhi.
The attack did not do any damage to the site according to Lodhi’s
assessment, and new software, costing nearly $2,000, is expected to be
installed in the coming few days to detect any future break-ins to the
site.

ISNA’s General Secretary Sayyid M. Syeed also issued an immediate
statement
explaining the attack and reacting to the message of “Muslim Extremists”
on
the site.
“A Muslim cannot be an extremist. God states in the Qur’an that He has
made
Muslims a moderate nation. Thus, any behavior that compromises justice
or
goes beyond the limits prescribed by God is completely forbidden,” said
Syeed.

He also called on Jewish people to thank God who liberated them from
years
of oppression, asking them to reconsider the situation in the
Palestinian
land where other people are being oppressed fighting for their freedom.

“We call on the Jewish people to remember the favor that God has given
them
and to repay these favors by establishing a just peace,” his statement
read.
Following a break in violence in the Palestinian territories last
September,
the information warfare erupted. Israelis who attacked Hezbollah’s web
site
in early October first initiated the cyberwar. After that incident, more
attacks followed on official and non-official sites on both sides of the
conflict.

“People out there are just not in their proper state of mind, and these
attacks happen,” said Lodhi, adding, “It happened before to Yahoo and
CNN.
But on our side we have to be ready and prepared for the challenges we
face
in the new Information Age.”
