The outburst by the 53-year-old former deputy prime minister came after judge Datuk Arifin Jaka repeatedly interrupted his lawyer who was arguing that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad be ordered to testify in the sodomy trial. "I want to know whether you have made a decision or not," Anwar shouted, his voice cracking, as the judge and defence lawyer Karpal Singh looked surprised. Then the judge flew into a rage. "You sit down, or I'll charge you with contempt." Anwar, still on his feet, gripping the wooden guard rails of the dock in the blue-carpeted court room with a high ceiling, refused to obey. "You charge me with whatever you want. If you have got instructions, say you have got instructions," he shouted, insinuating that the Malaysian authorities may have already given orders to the judge not to call Dr Mahathir as a witness. This is not the first time Anwar has accused a judge of being biased. He had done it during his previous trial, which ended one year ago with his conviction for abuse of power and a six-year jail sentence. The ongoing trial is to determine whether he sodomised his former family driver, Azizan Abu Bakar, in 1993. Anwar denies the charges against him, saying these are part of a plot scripted by Dr Mahathir and his allies to end his challenge to the Prime Minister's 18-year reign. Anwar was fired by Dr Mahathir in September 1998 and arrested soon after. His lawyers have tried for the past six months to get the court to summon Dr Mahathir as a witness, saying his testimony was crucial because he had met and questioned all the primary personalities in the case long before the matter was brought to court. In rebuttal, prosecutor Datuk Abdul Gani Patail noted yesterday that Dr Mahathir would have nothing to contribute. "The Prime Minister doesn't know exactly what happened," he said. Anwar's lawyer defended his client's outburst in court. "Injustice is a painful thing," Mr Karpal told Datuk Arifin. He said it should have been clear to the court long ago that Dr Mahathir's testimony was crucial. If Dr Mahathir is called into the courtroom, it would be the first face-to-face encounter between the two politicians since Anwar's sacking. -- AP, AFP ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1.6 Million Digital Images!
