Siti Hasmah's Visit To Iraq Not Aimed At Helping Saddam - Dr M
JITRA March 30 - Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today Datin Seri
Dr Siti Hasmah's visit to Iraq is not aimed at helping President
Saddam Hussein but to sympathise with the suffering Iraqi people who
lacked food and medicine.
The visit was made because Malaysia upheld human rights, the Prime
Minister said.
"We are not out to help Saddam and moreover he does not need our
help," he said when opening the Kubang Pasu Umno Division delegates
conference at Dewan Jitra here.
However, he said the United States had condemned the visit.
Dr Mahathir said Malaysia opposed Iraq's invasion of Kuwait but it
did not agree to Iraq being made a victim and held hostage by the
superpowers through economic sanctions.
It was also not agreeable to pressure being applied for Saddam's
removal, he added.
The Prime Minister's wife is leading a women's delegation on a visit
to Iraq and Jordan.
The Prime Minister said Malaysia was in a position to criticise the
violation of human rights anywhere.
"People now consider Malaysia as truly free," he said.
This was because not many countries had the courage to voice their
feelings on human rights, Dr Mahathir added.
He said Malaysia as a developing country upheld human rights and
justice and championed these virtues even in other places such as
Bosnia, Kosovo and Iraq.
