PAS REGAINS TERENGGANU AFTER 38 YEARS

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 30 (Bernama) -- PAS created an upset in the 10th general
election when it regained Terengganu after a 38-year wait, winning 28 of the
32 seats in the state legislative assembly.

It also won seven parliamentary seats while its partner in the Barisan
Alternatif won another seat. The remaining four state seats were won by the
Barisan Nasional (BN).

The defeat of former Menteri Besar Tan Sri Haji Wan Mokhtar Ahmad was a
great surprise to many people as he had never lost an election since 1969.

Unseated together with him were several prominent BN leaders including
former Public Enterprises Minister Datuk Dr Yusof Nor who is Umno
Information Chief, Deputy Agriculture Minister Datuk Tengku Mahmud Mansor,
Deputy Science, Technology and Environment Minister Datuk Abu Bakar Daud and
former Deputy Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Idris Jusoh.

PAS ruled Terengganu after winning the first general election after
Independence in 1959. However, its government under the leadership of
Menteri Besar (the late) Daud Samad lasted only about two years up to 1961.

This was after it lost its majority in the state legislative assembly when
several of its elected representatives hopped over to Umno.

Umno continued to stay in power, winning all the general elections that
followed in 1964, 1969, 1974 (Perikatan-PAS coalition government), 1978,
1982, 1986, 1990 and 1995.

During the period, the state government had been led by four Menteris Besar
from Umno namely (late) Tan Sri Ibrahim Fikri, (late) Datuk Mahmood
Sulaiman, Datuk Nik Hassan Abdul Rahman and Tan Sri Haji Wan Mokhtar Ahmad,
who lasted more than 25 years since 1974.

PAS' success in toppling the BN government in Terengganu was beyond the
expectation of many people especially Terengganu Umno leaders themselves,
including Menteri Besar Tan Sri Haji Wan Mokhtar Ahmad.

Three days ago Wan Mokhtar confidently told Bernama that the BN would not be
returned to power in the election but with bigger majority.

But after PAS victory was announced, Wan Mokhtar like a true statesman he is
accepted the verdict of the people.

Even in defeat, he still could not find any reason why the people rejected
the BN which had done all within its power to bring prosperity and
development to Terengganu.

PAS leaders on the other hand had anticipated victory. Several days before
polling, its deputy president Haji Abdul Hadi Awang and vice-president Haji
Mustaffa Ali were of the views that the party would clinch a comfortable win
in the election. Party leaders at the district level predicted 23 seats
would go to PAS.

Mustaffa said that right from the nomination day, PAS election machinery had
shown an extraordinary display of determination to ensure victory for its
candidates while the BN election machinery lacked the zeal and spirit.

This is what differentiates the supporters of both parties. PAS supporters
would give their wholehearted support to work of the party while Umno
supporters adopt "no pay no work" attitude.

PAS has been eyeing Terengganu for a very long time, especially after oil
and gas was discovered in the state since the early 80s, providing the state
with about RM500 million in royalty a year.

PAS leaders have been saying that a control over such natural resources
could strengthen a state government under opposition without depending too
much on financial assistance from the federal government.

At the same time, they also feel that their hold on Terengganu could also
help strengthen the PAS government in Kelantan which had limited source of
revenues.

How long can PAS hold on to Terengganu this time is anyone guess. But one
thing is sure, the people had made their choice although it might cause them
to be left out from the mainstream of development enjoyed by the other
states.

It is a decision which should be respected.
