Rumsfeld: U.S. Has Right To Assassinate
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld yesterday declared,
"You bet your life" when asked if America might assassinate terrorist bad guys.
"Do we have a right to defend ourselves by going after people who murder thousands
of Americans in a preemptive way to defend ourselves? You bet your life we do
and we're doing it," Rumsfeld told CNN's
"Late Edition."
Rumsfeld's bold statement came as he insisted U.S. military action against Afghanistan is "not a quagmire" - amid
growing restlessness in Congress that troops, not just bombs, are needed for
victory.
Meanwhile, U.S. airstrikes
continued yesterday against key government targets in Afghanistan, with one in Kabul killing at least 13 civilians, witnesses
told Afghan news services.
