Surely not 25 percent
http://www.malaysiakini.com.my/archives_letters/2000/dec/dec1/letter8.htm

I refer to K Kabilan's article Lunas Indian voters' swing an indicator (Nov
30). Personally, I just cannot believe that "25 percent of the Indian votes"
went to the BA in Lunas.

Bear in mind that the BA candidate polled only about 51.2 percent out of the
total number of valid votes cast and going by simple arithmetic and logic,
the Indian vote would be much less than 10 percent of the total with the
overwhelming majority of the Indian populace in Lunas surely voting for the
BN.

When one examines the population ratio of the three communities in Lunas (43
percent Malay, 37 percent Chinese and 20 percent Indian), then I expect that
a more realistic breakdown of the BA vote would be 67 percent from the
Malays, 56 percent from the Chinese and 8 percent from Indians, constituting
about 51.2 percent of the total vote.

In short, Indians are simply being out of step with the other races by
continuing to back the increasingly old and losing horse which is BN.

Shahrir, Johor's pride
http://www.malaysiakini.com.my/archives_letters/2000/dec/dec1/letter12.htm

There were only three persons that I have respect for in Umno. The first is
the late Tun Hussein Onn, may God bless his soul. (Unfortunately, his son
has not turned out to be a fraction of what he was.)

The second is Musa Hitam who stood up for what he believed in but was smart
enough to work his way around to survive, financially that is.

The last is Shahrir Abdul Samad who behaved totally as his own man to the
point of being reckless.

Before leaving Malaysia I used to bump into him on Tuesday mornings for an
early tee-off at the club. A humble person who never failed to greet anyone
he passed. I often thought that he had aged substantially and wondered if he
had mellowed. I am glad to see that he has indeed remained his old self as
can be seen in Zakiah Koya's story, Dr M to blame for Lunas defeat: Umno
veteran (Nov 30).

I hope Shahrir realises that the likes of him and Anwar Ibrahim seldom get
the helm. They will make enemies along the way and will never realise,
because of their trusting nature, that most of those around them are their
worst enemies and opportunists. If Shahrir already knows this, then he will
not be disappointed at the end of the day.

I therefore take my hat off to Shahrir for being man enough to utter the
truth about BN's loss in Lunas, not that I am shedding any tears. I stand
proud to be a Johorian because of what these three gentlemen represent,
honesty and integrity.
