==================== Subject: IAP-Net: Sharm el-Sheikh agreement ends in failure, adopts vague statement Date: Tue, 17 Oct 2000 05:57:36 -0500 (CDT) From: Islamic Association For Palestine <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Asalamu'alaikum Sharm el-Sheikh agreement ends in failure, adopts vague statement Occupied Jerusalem: 17 October - The Sharm-el-Sheikh has apparently failed to reach a clear agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority on putting an end to Israel's bloody repression of Palestinians protesting the Israeli occupation of their land and the desecration by Zionists of Islamic holy places in Jerusalem. However, in a ruse designed to blur the fiasco, the summit issued a vaguely-worded statement saying the two sides (Israel and the PA) agreed to a cease-fire and return to the status quo ante (the situation that preceded the current wave of violence). Egyptian President Husni Mubarak and US President Bill Clinton both made brief statements, stressing the need to stop the violence immediately. However, their statements were terse, vague and lacking essential details, which suggests the two sides were still sharply divided and that summit effectively failed to achieve truly tangible results. In his statement, Clinton said a fact-finding committee would be formed by the United states in coordination with UN Secretary- General Kufi Annan to establish how the violence started. One of the PA key demands has been the formation of an international inquiry commission to look into Israeli atrocities which has claimed over 120 Palestinian lives. Clinton didn't say if the committee's recommendations would have practical implications. Another ominous sign was the abrupt termination of the summit immediately after President Clinton finished his statement, which suggest that the summiteers didn't have much to say to the media.
