Malaysian PM orders ruling coalition to prepare for polls

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 25 (AFP) - Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad,
continuing his apparent drive for an imminent general election, Monday
ordered his ruling coalition to make preparations but again refused to
name
the date.

"I have asked all component parties to revive their election machinery
and
work together even before the candidates are named," he told a news
conference after chairing a two-hour meeting of the National Front
(Barisan
Nasional) supreme council.

Mahathir said an information panel would be set up to answer public
queries. Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi would head another
committee to draft the Front's manifesto.

"The focus of the manifesto is to explain about Barisan's plans for the
future. We will try to solve the people's problems and give them more
facilities so they can enjoy a better life and have higher income," he
said.

The premier criticised a joint manifesto unveiled by a new opposition
alliance Sunday, saying: "They are making empty promises because they
know
they will lose."

Asked about the date of the election, Mahathir said only: "It will
definitely be held before June next year. I promise."

The election must be held by June but is expected as early as next month
to
take advantage of an economic recovery.

The National Front has been in power for 25 years and Asia's longest
serving elected leader has headed it for the past 18.

Tens of thousands thronged the national stadium Sunday for celebrations
marking the Front's 25th anniversary, an event which one official
described
as the "final battle cry" before the election.

Mahathir, who spoke for 90 minutes Sunday, described the polls "as
around
the corner" and hit out at the new opposition alliance which he said was

spreading lies and slander about the government.

The polls are seen as his toughest test of recent years after the
economic
slump and the controversial sacking of his deputy Anwar Ibrahim last
year
divided the Malay community.

Anwar, who says he is a victim of a top-level political conspiracy, was
sentenced to six years' jail in April for corruption and is now on trial

for sodomy.

The National Front is a successor to the Alliance Party coalition which
had
ruled since independence from Britain in 1957.

Mahathir's United Malays National Organisation, the Malaysian Chinese
Association and the Malaysian Indian Congress form its backbone.

In every election the Front has kept its two-thirds parliamentary
majority
which allows it to amend the constitution.
