I got the request about a month ago followed by a phishing attempt. They
purported to be from Valve and wanted to confirm my password. I asked them

Was his password something easy? It's not hard to bruteforce a password if
it's a dictionary word or phrase. The adding to the friends list is probably
just to obtain your account name so they can bruteforce it.

it has been reported to me that players have been adding themselves to your
friends list and somehow stealing the accounts
i am also seeing many ppl suddenly trying to add me to their friends list
1 members account has already been stolen this way
