There really isn't a big performance difference amongst Linux
distributions. Some of them have experimental patches (Like Fedora,
or Debian's 'unstable'), which might be a good thing, or not-so-good.

In my experience, private content banners have never really worked for HL1
clients. At the moment, even with everything properly coonfigured all I see
is a black panel. I did confirm via my web server that the proper files are
being accessed.

On a side note, I don't think 1000Hz is the max, just the max
recommended. Google around a little bit and you'll understand why you
don't want to go much higher than this. Higher kernel frequency
doesn't equal higher performance in all situations

There are no problems with X2's, we run many of them and have no issues at
all.
I suggest you check through the archive for X2 discussion topics if you are
having problems!

I have just put up a srcds custom maps server. Whenever i go to a map
that i have not loaded before it does various things like sampling
walking space and whatnot. This on some maps can take over 10 minutes.
Is there a way to have the server generate these via rcon or something

"fps_max" has no effect what so ever on the performance of hlds.
The server fps or "ticrate" is controlled by the CVAR sys_ticrate which
can be set at either command-line or your server.cfg. I'd recommend a
ticrate of 200. Which gives us 100
