Well, whatever it is, Windows does something differently, because as I
said, I was able to just about double the update rate for my servers
when I switched to Linux.

The update is very simple:
Change etch to lenny in /etc/apt/sources.list
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
and answer a few questions.
My update went very smooth, no problems at all.
