Even if you remove the browser (IE) in windows it will be able to use the
http-engine, since its built-in windows, with a couple of simple API
queries. And I understand why they did (do) this. Because its so simple.
You dont have to use your own XML-partser and so on.

It won't be using IE as such, it'll be using "mshtml.dll" I imagine. IE is
basically a window into this and can set various settings that this dll will
utilise also. So even if you remove IE from your install, that dll will still
exist as it's a fundamental part of the OS and upsetting it's sett

I must disagree with this. I don't have windows IE even on this computer.
And I have no problems downloading with sv_downloadurl .
I also know of someone else who stripped out IE on WIN2K pc and has no
issues.

That'd be it. I don't know about security - thinks its just beta that
doesn't work with steam. I had similar issues when running that bet
