My teacher, Forrest Standley, often told me that he
buzzed on the bus rides to various gigs, but he
never told me the range he buzzed in. buzzing

the feeling that he didn't consider it as important
as other teachers did.
I have a very low buzz,
One more data point for the buzzing discussion. I started playing in
September, 2004, and my weak point for my first year was my tone. Simply
put, while I was learning to negotiate making pitches come out of my horn,
they never sounded more than mediocre and often sounded just terrible.
I was
7 to 10 hours per week depending on rehearsal
and concert schedule.

Well then, now that you have re-defined a serious horn player, I'm one of
those that have a (non musical) job. When at home the only time I get to
practice is one morning over the weekend. I will play until my lip falls off
which is generally about 3 hours. However, when I travel for more than a
It is a controversial subject. Some fine teachers say only to play on the horn.
Some advocate free buzzing, and others say it is damaging. Free buzzing is
different from playing with a mouthpiece it uses the muscles differently. Some
good players cannot free buzz: they never learned that
As with most things in life, we as people are different one from another, hence

Great, great, great, Steve, you hit the point right on. (I
must say, I do not buzz at all, as I have a natural
embouchure which works even after 6 weeks abstinence from
the horn - well, admitted, the endurance has to build up
then, but it takes just two rehearsals).

Dear List,
I would like to thank all of you, I now have many more than enough

This whole discussion reminds me of an article I read on the Stork
website about pressure and buzzing sans mouthpiece (found here:
http://www.storkcustom.com/html/pressure_buzzing.html). The article
seperates horn players into two types: those who employ the compression

Dear Ron,
Thank you for responding to my survey, ans also for being one of the first.
I wasn't sure what kind of response I would get, I needed fifty, but I
surpassed my goal.
Thanks again,

Dear List,
How can I build my embouchure and facial muscles?? Are there any
techniques I could use without touching the horn

Everything needs patience first !! Understood. Embouchure
builds up mainly through the lip - mouthpiece contact, so
building up muscles or an embouchure (muscles, lip surface
build up, contractability of lips, muscle reaction) just by
moving the lips (stretching contracting) does not work. It
