[Hornlist] Mouthpiece needs plating

2007-07-21 Thread hifromkim
Greetings! I'm in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area, and I was wondering where the best place is to get a mouthpiece replated. Does anyone on the list have any suggestions? Thanks, Kim Newell AOL now offers free email

[Hornlist] Beethoven's Ninth

2007-03-31 Thread HIfromKIM
Howdy, horn list folks! We're playing Beethoven's Ninth in our community orchestra, and the conductor has asked the first horn player to play the fourth horn solo, stating that's standard operating procedure in all the big orchestras. Is that true? Or does he maybe just have a beef with ou

[Hornlist] Basic: Oiling Valves

2006-07-01 Thread HIfromKIM
If you've tried oiling the valves by removing the screw caps and putting a drop on the thing in the middle and that wasn't enough, try putting a little oil (barely a drop -- you don't need much) in the little groove on the back where the thing moves back and forth when you push down the valve

Thank you all for your help with getting my buddy's horn on a plane. It's great to have such an awesome bunch of horn players at my fingertips! Kim ___ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/opti

[Hornlist] Gig Bag

2006-06-27 Thread HIfromKIM
I'm sure this topic has been hacked up before, but does anyone have any quick recommendations for a gig bag to take on an airplane? A buddy of mine leaves in less than two weeks. I'm trying to convince him that the Holton cut bell case fits in the overhead. At least mine did when I traveled

[Hornlist] Concert Bands

2006-06-27 Thread HIfromKIM
IMHO, I think that, instead of sending money to NPR and PBS, folks should be sending some cash to their local concert band if they'd like to support local concert bands. Otherwise, it'd be like sending money to NPR to help the folks in New Orleans after Katrina because that's where I get my n

[Hornlist] Re: Bells Up

2006-04-26 Thread HIfromKIM
Howdy, all! Thanks for the Bells Up confirmation. Sounds like we horns knew what we were talking about then. The conductor said that the bell should be facing forward, and it should feel like we're playing the valves upside down. I'm going to hand him my horn Thursday and ask for a demon

[Hornlist] Bells Up

2006-04-24 Thread HIfromKIM
Howdy, horn gurus! In a "bells up" section of Bernstein's Jeremiah, our conductor tonight explained that we horns should be holding our instruments in a such a way that would require additional people (maybe small children or midgets) to actually work the valves. I think he's crazy, but he'

[Hornlist] Re: Not Really a Mozart Fan

2006-04-13 Thread HIfromKIM
I find it funny that some folks automatically assume that I'm young and that when I "mature" I'll grow to like Mozart. I also find it funny that some folks feel the need to carefully explain the intricacies of playing his music, just because I said I didn't particularly care for it. It almo

[Hornlist] Not Really a Mozart Fan

2006-04-09 Thread HIfromKIM
Since one of the list members asked, I figured I'd put my two cents in about why I don't particularly care for Mozart. Basically, I like tension, and I like music that splatters you up against the back wall of the hall. I like music that, when you're done playing it, you're thinking "What a

[Hornlist] The Four Hornsmen

2006-03-16 Thread hifromkim
Howdy, list. Does anyone know where I could buy (or borrow) "The Four Hornsmen" by David Bennett for concert band? Our community band director said he'd program it (for four Hornswomen, BTW) if I could find it. Thanks, Kim Newell ___ post: horn@musi
