Hi Everyone,

This is why I teach horn lessons: It is an absolute joy to work with the younger kids. My newest student came for his lesson this evening and as we were winding down I was giving the parents a recap of what we did during his lesson and what to get in the way of materials for the next. His mother told me he was a young published poet.

He had in his band folder a copy of one of his poems. Naturally, it's about French horns. The young man's name is Dale Kellar. Dale is a 7th grader at Carter Middle School, Warren, Michigan. His band director is a gentleman named David Sanchez. With Dale's permission I am posting his poem.

French Horns are Awesome!
by: Young Poet, Dale Kellar

French Horns are awesome,
They're the best of the best!
But sometimes (like in Funkytown)
We don't have any rest.

Sure sometimes they're gurgley,
And get our shoes wet,
And so maybe we don't get
The best music yet!

And maybe remembering
Our mouthpiece is tough,
But Mr. Sanchez understands
And doesn't play rough!

So maybe you say French Horn is hard
Not your kind,
But nothing you say can make me
Change my mind!

'Cause French Horns are awesome,
And I don't regret
That I switched to the best
Of the instruments yet!

One has to love his enthusiasm towards the horn. I look forward to working with him. Right now, he's got an old beat up Reynolds, but I'm sure that will change in time. He has played horn for less than a year, has good pitch and the potential for a very good tone.
