US Customs is also being run by Homeland Security, at least ports and borders are being run under the "homeland security" umbrella.
So Hans, maybe it was a import/export issue? Apparently, all personal shipments that have a value over a certain amount must have validation, inlcuding social security numbers....now I HEARD from a UPS agent this was going to happen, or has happened? I agree with Daniel on his point. To me, this "holy war" insanity makes an already overburdened goverment agency all the more inefficient. There is no such thing as a "holy war".
