One of the community groups I play with is a long-ago merger of the Pontiac
(MI) Symphony with the orchestra of nearby Oakland University (We are in
Oakland County).
They tried to change the name a couple years ago, but after one season were
forced to change it back to the Pontiac Oakland

Well not sure how you categorize rare. It was done, rather well IMHO,

This thread is almost 'threaded'. I believe the original interpretation of
Rare horn piece to be performed in this context, refers to the infrequent
performance of this piece within the United Kingdom; and yes, an added bonus is
that it is to be performed on period instruments by credible
No, it's performed fairly regularly in England (and maybe the rest of
Britain too) nowadays - I've played it about a dozen times. Thirty years ago
it was rare but not any more. Even period performances are, although still
quite an event, are becoming less rare.

Bill, Not to start a pissing contest, but here in Michigan we think of the
DSO as the nearly 100 year old World class Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

So you're saying it's a piece for rare horns.
It's a rare piece for horn, played by a medium number of players, and it
must be well done.
Please pass the salt.

Yeah, that way they's need only four musicians.
How about a soprano recorder, an alto flute, a
tenor trombone, and a bass sarusaphone?

I think it's rare because, if I remember correctly, the Orchestra of the Age
of Enlightenment use period instruments.

Also, both the NSO and the Marine Band are doing it in May here in DC.
Should be great on both accounts!

Yes, but not five valved triple horns with top c extension and bar.
Period instruments - There have been several periods in music (I've lived
through a couple of them!)
During the romantic period they tended to use single horns with piston
valves and generally F or Eb crooks
