Since Michael K. was astute enough to spot and correct his misstep on Tchaikovsky (though there truly is NO correct way to spell it, just ways to approximately transliterate the cyrillic), I am surprised to see "San Fransisco" appear in header after header after header (I guess Bob Ward was just being tactful - an admirable quality I seem to lack - in his refusal to correct this in his postings on the thread). No offense intended, but this reminded me of the fairly recent discussion of a concerto by Motzart that appeared on this list.
Of possibly more interest, though certainly not of any great relevance, I recall that "Corno di Bassetto" was George Bernard Shaw's nom de plume when writing music criticism. Since a query on "why is it a French horn?" has shown us the angle on the English one and lead the whole discussion to the dogs by bringing up the basset relative the clarinet (particularly beloved of Mozart) I suppose I ought to try to return the discussion to more germane areas, but I'll leave that to Hans (OK, I know that's pretty lame; I'll stop now).
