I just listened to Tuckwell's 1990 (?) recording of the Strauss - and at
figure 24 he observes the phrasing exactly as in the score, and it blends
beautifully with the WW. Later on he diverges slightly (figure 27), but now
as the single solo line he can be more liberal.

I'm aware of the facsimile and its phrasing - I also have a copy of Hans
Pizka's own part which he used in his recording in the 60's.
Barry Tuckwell thinks that the published edition is often inaccurate in
respect of the original manuscript. Of course the printed score may be wrong,
Just go check out the facsimile of the horn part that was use for the first
performances of this concerto by Gottfried von Freiburg. The second movement
