Carlberg; did you never study music theory? I categorically disagree with what you state only in the stance that the chord is being utilized in a work someplace; although a person with pitch 'will' hear 'any' spelling; the TEXTBOOK will designate the correct spelling for that particular exercise, especially where that chord is preceded and anteceded by modulatory chords.
Yes, okay in the instance that you may specify, if you take a single chord and spell it out; yes, any spelling will do; but for music composition; there are specific rules for composing; one of which is the proper modulation of chords and especially at all costs, the avoidance of accidentals (although they do happen, when a piece is properly keyed; accidentals do not have to happen unless it happens to be perhaps a jazz work or a 'new music' composition). Should one fail to modulate correctly to the correct chord structure without accidentals (unless they are impossible to avoid); then one is in trouble, THEORETICALLY. I say theoretically because no composer worth his/her salt is going to put forth a work unless it has been checked and re-checked for correct theory, not to mention content, not to mention beauty, correct notes, correct transposition for all instruments; shall I go on? No, I do not put myself forward as a music theory expert by any means but I do know the basics, the intermediaries; some advanced, and a lot of modulations and I am a music composer (trying to get my stuff out). Anyone on this list who IS a theory expert pls feel free to dispute what I say at any time, privately or publicly; it makes no difference to me as I am quite willing to take good advice at any time. best wishes Rachel >If you are asked to write down "this" chord, and you hear only the >chord, any spelling is correct, I'd say. _______________________________________________ post: horn@music.memphis.edu unsubscribe or set options at http://music2.memphis.edu/mailman/options/horn/archive%40jab.org
