Several weeks ago I had my 16 year-old Lewis's valves rebuilt by Chuck Ward,
and I wanted to share a little of my experience. First of all, Mr. Ward was
absolutely wonderful to deal with right from the start. I live around 4
hours from Cleveland, and Mr. Ward was very accommadating in allowing me to
bring my horn to him in person (I had a bad mailing experience 4 years ago,
and only ship my instrument when absolutely necessary). He then allowed me
to watch as he dismantled and examined my valves. After finishing work on
my horn, he allowed me to meet him in Toledo as he was passing through, to
pick up the instrument.
Now for the best part: The rebuild job Chuck did is unbelievable. After
playing the horn for five minutes, I realized that I should have had this
done years ago. My horn seems to almost play itself. My slurs are clean,
the high register on the horn is actually comfortable now and easy to keep
in tune. I basically have a brand new horn thanks to Mr. Ward.
