Here's a contrarian opinion. When I was your son's age and in love with the
horn (I still am), I did not care for the Dennis Brain recordings. Too dry and
wimpy. This is partly due to the recording technology of the time. I would have
gotten a lot more out of current recordings of Hermann Baumann

When I was younger I got every recording of every horn piece I could lay my
hands on.
It never crossed my mind who was better, because that was not important to
me then. I wanted to learn how different people played.
