So I guess it's not a corruption of the file (speaking from the perspective of
a non-programmer.)

This seems to only happen sporadically.
Perhaps it has to do with the size of the mask? The one in example extends out
to near the edges of the image. some of the other smaller masks on different
images in the same project behave correctly.
