Born and raised in Mumbai to illiterate parents, Shakeel started his pursuit
of equality at an early age.  On December 6, 1992, with the demolition of
Babri Masjid in India, which caused large communal violence and destroyed
the secular fabric of independent India. This event completely changed
Shakeel’s outlook. He volunteered at one of the relief camps set up for the
victims, with the plan to stay five days - he ended up staying more than
five years. He gave up his studies and devoted himself to the cause of
communal harmony. His experience in Mumbai lead him to Gujarat after the
violence of 2002, where he worked for the next five years. He is currently
based in New Delhi.  In addition to continuing the same work he is fighting
for the rights of the marginalized people. In 2009 he left Aman Biridari to
start World Faith India, launching Haq, the flagship campaign that is
working to address the needs of the homeless in New Delhi.
