Under the garb of anti-Maoist operations and close on the heels of the Home Ministry directive, the Central and State Governments is unleashing a witch hunt on rights’ activists and civil society actors in India. The recent arrests of 12 activists in Gujarat on the basis of an omnibus FIR, members of a Fact Finding Team in West Bengal, trade union leaders, human rights activists in UP, Chattisgarh and many other states have reopened the debate on an unannounced emergency-like condition that confronts rights’ activists across the country. Abdul Shakeel Basha is the 14th person to be arrested by the Gujarat Police in this smear campaign. It is distressing that national newspapers and television channels have reproduced the police handouts without even bothering to counter check the facts.
