Dear all On December 3, 2011, Bhopal police brutally attacked a non-violent Rail Roko agitation staged by 1000s of Bhopal survivors demanding acknowledgement of correct figures of dead and injured in calculation of compensation figures. Of five places where Rail Roko was staged, the policse went on a rampage in one locality. Media reports concede that the violence was triggered by the police, and photographic evidence documents policemen pelting stones.
The day ended with the Chief Minister giving his personal and written assurance conceding to all demands, including the promise of an independent and unbiased investigation into the causes and actors behind the violence on 3 December. Within hours of giving this promise, the Chief Minister broke it, using the opportunity to settle religious scores. Youth, mostly from families of Muslim gas victims, have been singled out. They have been stripped to their underpants and brutally tortured in at least two police stations in Bhopal.
