Ted, Actually, you were correct originally. Ring works between systems in an environment that has a sysplex and systems outside the sysplex. It is Star that works only within a sysplex. In fact, if you have only a sysplex, there is almost zero reason to use Ring and IBM strongly recommends

Gray, The GRS ring has to have CTC connections between all LPARs that you want to share data. The more LPARs in the ring, the worse performance gets. At one site, we had 8 LPARs (6 were in a single sysplex). It was managable for our needs. As for sharing tape, I prefer the IBM product ATAM. Com
