Interesting question. XML certainly maps well to/from IMS DB, so to the
extent e-mail data storage is similar you might be onto something. I see
that some people have been working with XML data stores to support e-mail
archiving, at least.

By nature email fits into a hierarchical database, rather than a relational
one. The IMAP data model is hierarchical as far as I can tell. Would an IMAP
server with an IMS backend be a good idea? If so perhaps someone already
